Whitney Plantation

Louisiana State Highway 18, near Wallace, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana

The first record of Whitney Plantation is found in the land claims made after the Louisiana Purchase. These are recorded in the American State Papers. Nicholas Haydel and Jean Jacques Haydel Sr. both confirmed to have been in continuous possession of neighboring plantations on the west bank, ten years prior to 1803. The name 'Haydel', also occurs on the Carlos Trudeau map in the present position of Whitney Plantation. (no. 46). Jean Jacques passed on his plantation to his two sons, Marcelin and Jean Jacques Jr., in 1820. Nicholas sold his plantation to the same two brothers (his nephews ) in1822. This combined unit became Whitney Plantation.
