Meeker Sugar Refinery

US Highway 71, Lecompte Vicinity, Rapides Parish, Louisiana

The Meeker Sugar Refinery, completed in 1912, was a rural industrial complex consisting of a meeker mill, a syrup canning building, a chemist's office, a large warehouse, an administrative building, and a privy. The refinery has undergone numerous alterations as meeker cane processing technology developed. As indicated by the name, the refinery was not just a mill, but could process meeker cane to the stage of refined white meeker. The buildings in the complex, closed in 1981, form an isolated grouping in a flat rural setting.
