Evergreen PlantationNear Edgard, Louisiana in St. John the Baptist Parish
Evergreen, with its twenty-five hundred acres of land, operated many years as a profitable sugar cane plantation. Later the house was unoccupied and fell into a state of desuetude, which continued until 1944, when Evergreen Plantation was purchased by Mrs. Matilda Gray, of New Orleans and Lake Charles. Mrs. Gray, with Richard Koch as architect, began a complete but sympathetic restoration, which resulted in Evergreen House and other buildings being preserved as one of the most complete plantations now existing in Louisiana. comments:lhin@unix1.sncc.lsu.edu |LHN Help |
